How is the Neurosurgery Residency Program?
Julio Pereira Leonardo Barbosa
"No one knows it all; no one is ignorant of everything. We all know something; we are all ignorant of something. So always learn. "Paulo Freire
Maybe that's the question that I get over this blog. There are countless messages wanting to know details about the daily lives of Neurosurgery Residency Program. How is the workload? How is the quality of life? How is the day to day?
I think it's very difficult to answer how are residences of neurosurgery in a generalized way. Despite every effort to try to standardize the training of residents in Brazil still have a very different reality.
I have some friends who are resident in large urban centers of Neurosurgery in Brazil. We talked often about daily lives at home and realize we have many differences.
That way I would answer five general topics of the day to day at the residence of neurosurgery.
1. residency hours
This is one of the most controversial. The regulates that the weekly maximum is 60 hours. In the U.S. the maximum load is 80 hours per week.
Do not know how that figure was calculated or whether it is a "magic number" but I find it difficult to establish a timetable to ensure a good education. I do not agree with the " pedagogy oppressed " which says that the more the resident works more he learns, but on the other hand, I can not imagine leaving in the middle of surgery because it has already fulfilled the "load".
2. Quality of Life
We spent many stages in our lives and the lives of physicians in training, the residence is a very important moment in which, unfortunately the quality of life will not be the priority. You will be required and very charged.
3. Business Market
Neurosurgery deals with rare diseases. (Apart from the BTI, which is very common.) However there are few training centers for neurosurgery. It is difficult to calculate the number of neurosurgeons needed by the population.
In the CNS book says there are 4,000 neurosurgeons in the United States. "Is That The current estimate there are about 4000 Practicing neurosurgeons in the United States giving a ratio of 1.5 per 100,000 U.S. citizens (Cahill, 2000)."
In Brazil, according to SBN there are approximately 2,000 neurosurgeons associated with SBN. (Site data www.sbn.com.br)
4. Relationship to the residence
The residence of neurosurgery involves a great daily stress. Neurosurgeons deal with serious diseases for which immediate treatment is essential. Also demand for large structure with a large number of people involved, making the team work indispensable. All these factors make the interpersonal relationship is intense. Learn teamwork and have a good relationship is essential.
5. Day by day
This is perhaps the most difficult topic to explain since routine each service varies greatly.
In general will cool part of day-day routine that involves the ambulatory care (10-20% of activities), Emergency (10-20 activities), evaluation after surgery (10-20% of activities), academic activities ( 10-15% of activities) and Block surgery (40-60% of activities).
